Associate Professor (since 2020) with Aggregation (since 2008) at the Department of Landscape, Environment and Planning (DPAO) of the School of Science and Technology (ECT) of the University of Évora (UÉ), served as Deputy Director of the ECT of UÉ from January 2013 to May 2021; It has been an integrated member of the Mediterranean Institute for Agriculture, Environment and Development (MED) since 1998, a collaborating member of the Earth Sciences Institute (ICT) since 2015 and is a member of several international research groups, such as PROMUEVE, UIC, among others.

 Graduated in Biophysical Engineering from the University of Évora (in 1989), he completed his PhD in Environmental Sciences, branch of Plant Ecology (Phytosociology), from the UÉ, in June 1998. He completed a degree in Vegetation Ecology, at the University of Évora, in March 2008. She has been teaching for over 40 years (1982-1986 at the Nursing Schools in Guarda/Évora and since 1990 at the University of Évora) a wide range of Curricular Units ranging from Ecology to Landscape.

He also collaborated in the teaching of various disciplines of Ecology, Planning and Landscape in several national and international universities, where he was even responsible for some Curricular Units of Doctorate in “Análisis y Gestión de Ecosistemas”, at the “Universidad de Jaén”, in the context of of habitat management and conservation.

He directed at UÉ a Doctoral Program in Environmental Sciences (2009-2012) and a Degree in Environmental Sciences (2007-2012) and has collaborated in several masters and doctorates taught in other Portuguese and Spanish universities (Universidade de Lisboa, Universidade Nova de Lisbon, “Universidad of Extremadura, Universidad de Jaén, Universidad de Salamanca, Universidad Internacional- Espanha”, among others).

 In recent years he has led (and collaborated) in the organization of several scientific events, namely the International Seminar “Biodiversity management and conservation” which already has fourteen editions. He coordinated several national and international Research Projects, where the international project LIFE RELICT, still in progress, deserves special mention.

 He has participated in several service provision, through an intense activity of interaction with society, responding to numerous requests and raising significant profits for the University of Évora. He regularly collaborates with several researchers from European countries (Spain, France and Italy).

 He has more than two hundred publications (books, book chapters, articles in indexed journals, articles in refereed journals, as well as more than three hundred conference and scientific meeting communications.

 He is a regular, annual referee in international journals such as “Chapingo”, “International Journal of Geobotanical Research”, “Global Geobotany”, “Documents Phytosociologiques”, among many others.

 From 2015 to 2020 he chaired the Portuguese Association of Vegetation Sciences – PHYTOS.
