André Albuquerque completed his PhD in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences in 2023/01/11 at the Universidade de Évora in association with the Universidade do Algarve. His thesis focused on exploring transcriptomics in Portuguese local pig breeds, establishing a link between gene expression and characterized phenotypes. In early 2018, completed ADER18F, a training programme in Bioinformatics, followed by a six-month internship at INIA (Madrid) under the guidance of Dr. Cristina Óvilo to further develop his skills. Coming from a background in Biochemistry and Biology, the opportunity to take a PhD programme in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences broadened his perspectives on the emerging issues regarding agricultural systems. In the past three years, he cumulatively held a temporary position as a senior technician in the Plant Virology and Mycology laboratories of MED and has been providing diagnostic services to various crop industry stakeholders and local farmers using microscopic and molecular tests to identify potential pathogens. This is also complemented with the effort of granting technical support and suggesting preventive measures for plant disease control. André has authorship of 17 peer-reviewed publications in journals indexed in the most common scientific databases and published two book chapters, translating into an h-index of 8 in Scopus and 9 in Scholar. Between ongoing and concluded, he participated in a total of 14 projects, has ad hoc reviewed nine article publications for seven different journals and is currently guest editor for a special issue in one of these. Throughout the years, he engaged in both national and international meetings with 12 oral and 37 poster presentations and has contributed to the submission of two patents that are currently awaiting approval. Furthermore, he participated in seven transfer of knowledge activities with dynamic public presentations and has received a total of four awards, two for best poster presentations (2022 and 2023), one for best exhibition (2023) and one for Applied R&D (2022). Finally, André is currently supervising one master student, co-supervising two others and has one co-supervision successfully concluded.
