MED researchers publish first scientific paper on fat transcriptome of Alentejano and Bísaro pigs
Within the framework of the European project TREASURE, MED researchers have just published the first paper on the transcriptome of subcutaneous fat from the two main Portuguese local pig breeds, Alentejana and Bísara.
This study pointed out more than 450 differentially expressed genes in the fat of both breeds, namely genes related to lipid synthesis and metabolism, as well as to the production of monounsaturated and long-chain fatty acids. Some of these may be used as molecular markers related to fat quality, and later applied in the genetic selection of these breeds, aiming to improve the quality of the products obtained.
