MED director moderates panel on the role of water in agriculture in the face of climate change at CNCACSA conference
On World Climate Change Day, celebrated on October 24, 2024, Fátima Baptista, MED’s Director, moderated a thematic panel at the conference ‘Climate Change: What challenges will we face in the coming decades?’, organised by the National Competence Centre for Climate Change in the Agroforestry Sector.
The panel he moderated, ‘The future of water in Mediterranean agriculture in the face of climate change’, addressed critical issues related to water management in the context of climate change, with a special focus on the challenges facing the Alentejo and the role of Alqueva. Among the subjects discussed were the recent Iberian agreement on the management of the Guadiana waters, the importance of water interconnections and the new working group on water, led by José Salema, President of EDIA.
The event was attended by various specialists from the agroforestry sector and also by the Minister of Agriculture, José Manuel Fernandes, who reaffirmed his support for the sector, showing his total willingness to move forward with some irrigation projects and to unblock issues such as new genomic techniques and the use of drones in the application of phytopharmaceuticals at European level.
