MED at the ITD Alliance Conference
From November 4 to 8, the ITD24 Conference took place in Utrecht, the Netherlands, under the theme “Inter- and Transdisciplinarity Beyond Buzzwords: Educational Pathways for Sustainable Research Collaborations.” The event brought together participants from all over the world and from all fields and research cultures, ranging from local interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary projects to projects spanning the Global North and the Global South, to addresses both the theory and practice of inter- and transdisciplinary research collaboration and the educational pathways to making such collaborations sustainable and available for all.
MED as founding donor member of the ITDA – Global Alliance for Inter- and Transdisciplinarity, was represented by the researcher Helena Guimarães, that is also Leadership Board member of the Alliance. Helena Guimarães presented the research paper entitled “Assessment of Transdisciplinarity by Its Participants: The Case of Tertúlias do Montado, Alentejo, Portugal” that delve into the participant perspective when examining the quality of transdisciplinarity, based on a questionnaire to evaluate a set of TD principles within this specific TD initiative.
The Tertúlias do Montado, took centre stage also during the presentation by Catarina Isidoro (MED-UÉvora), that has participated in the ITDA Conference. She shared results from applying a tool designed to guide the initiative’s future. This tool integrates the Theory of Change (TOC), a recognized transdisciplinary approach that facilitates transformative learning processes, with serious games known for fostering collaborative discussions and enhancing stakeholder engagement.
Helena and Catarina also co-facilitated the workshop “The Real Life of Integration Experts,” organized by the ITDA Working Group on Integration Experts and Expertise. This session focused on advancing careers in integration expertise while strengthening connections between research, policy, and practice.
On the final day, Helena Guimarães was a plenary speaker in the session “Navigating Uncharted Waters: Pathways of an ITD Career,” sharing her professional journey in ITD research. She also led an ITD Alliance Networking Event, where participants engaged in interactive discussions, hands-on activities, and collaborative planning for future ITD research and teaching initiatives.
